An Xmas treat for lovers of post-punk with a psychedelic twist!
Formed in 1979 by Martin Bramah, a founding member of The Fall, and christened by John Cooper Clarke, the Blue Orchids signed to Rough Trade, released a clutch of well-received records and toured with Nico, both as backing band and as support. Splitting in 1982, the band have periodically reformed. Bramah has been their presiding genius throughout. Whilst their latest album, the superb ‘The Magical Record of Blue Orchids’, suggests their roots in 60s garage rock, Marc Riley suggests a different set of influences describing Bramah as ‘a brilliant guitarist and song-writer … Think Tom Verlaine guesting with The Doors.’
Formed in 2006, Tim Lyons, singer and bassist of The Sandells, coined the term ‘krautpunk’ to describe the band’s melding of the spirit and sound of krautrock bands such as Can and Neu! with the attitude of punk. Their debut album ‘Forwards!’ received 9 out of 10 in Louder Than War and was hailed by Mick Middles as ‘a fine, fine, rock album’.
