Jd came to prominence as front man of post-punk outfit Calvin Party (formerly Levellers 5). A firm favourite of the late John Peel, who described them as ‘the greatest undiscovered band’, they recorded eight Peel Sessions, charted in the all-important Festive 50, and released a number of well-received albums including ‘Lies, Lies and Government’ and ‘Sex and Other Life Tragedies’. Recent years have seen Jd continue to release records on Probe Plus. His anti-folk songs winning him airplay on Gideon Coe and admirers such as Half Man Half Biscuit with whom he regularly tours. Of Jd’s latest album, 2018’s ‘The Batchain Pullers’, Louder Than War opined ‘If there was still a Peel Festive 50 it would be in the Top Ten this year.’
Formed in 2006, Tim Lyons, singer and bassist of The Sandells, coined the term ‘krautpunk’ to describe the band’s melding of the spirit and sound of krautrock bands such as Can and Neu! with the attitude of punk. Their debut album ‘Forwards!’ received 9 out of 10 in Louder Than War and was hailed by Mick Middles as ‘a fine, fine, rock album’.
A new creative venture fronted by Ian ‘Moet’ Moss (The Hamsters, Kill Pretty, Four Candles). Moet, a key figure on Manchester’s underground music scene, describes English Disease thus ‘Pseudonyms in use, Bang Bang Maxwell on drums, Maximus Volume on guitar, Max Factor on vocals, the idea is to artfully spit out our truths at high voltage and oppose preconceptions and orthodoxy.’
